Nurse Educator Excellence

Reimagining the Nursing Education Culture to Solve the Nursing Shortage

Advanced Technology, Diverse and Inclusive Workforce, and Lifelong Learning by Bridgett Byrd Sellars, PhD, RN, CNE, NE-BC, FACHE

The world is facing a critical shortage of nurses across multiple specialties, a crisis that has far-reaching consequences for healthcare systems worldwide. A combination of factors, including shortages of nurse educators, closure of nursing programs, an aging population and a retiring nursing workforce, have all exacerbated this pressing issue. To address the nursing shortage effectively, it is imperative to reimagine the nursing education culture. By embracing innovative approaches and adapting to the changing needs of the healthcare industry with a diverse nursing workforce, we can pave the way for a sustainable and thriving nursing workforce.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the country will need more than 203,000 new registered nurses every year through 2026 to meet patient care needs that will be vacated by a large pool of retiring nurses. The American Nurses Association reports that by 2022, there will be a need for 3.44 million nurses. In 2021, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing reported that more than 90,000 qualified nursing applications were turned away due to insufficient number of faculty and preceptors, among many other reasons.

More than 70% of Nursing Faculty reported an increased level of satisfaction with their role when equipped with proper training, resources, and support provided by Dr. Sellars Educate.

Our research shows that completing Faculty Development programs that are aligned with National League for Nursing Nurse Educator Competencies increases Nurse Educator knowledge, skills, and satisfaction leading to increased retention of Nursing Faculty, decreased faculty vacancies, and increased enrollment opportunities for accepting more nursing students. Technology can be complicated, and overwhelming for nursing faculty. Adequate training on the different technologies better prepare the nursing faculty to integrate modern technologies into the learning experience.

A diverse nursing workforce that reflects the communities it serves is essential for providing culturally competent care. Nursing education institutions should actively seek to increase diversity among their student populations and faculty members. By promoting inclusivity, we can create an environment that nurtures creativity, empathy, and understanding, leading to better patient care outcomes.

The nursing education landscape must evolve to incorporate modern technologies that align with the demands of contemporary healthcare. Virtual simulation labs, augmented reality training, and telehealth integration are just a few examples of how technology can revolutionize nursing education. By providing nursing students with hands-on experiences through virtual simulations, they can develop critical skills and decision-making abilities before encountering real patients. Additionally, integrating telehealth concepts into the curriculum prepares future nurses for the increasingly digital nature of healthcare delivery.

Nursing is dynamic, and constantly evolving with advances in medical knowledge and technology. Encouraging nurses to pursue continuous education throughout their careers is vital to maintaining high standards of care. Nursing education programs should support and incentivize ongoing learning, offering opportunities for advanced degrees, certifications, and professional development. By empowering nurses to be lifelong learners, we can create a highly skilled, adaptable, and valued nursing workforce.

By reimagining the nursing education culture, we can prepare a new generation of nurses who are technologically savvy, inclusive, culturally competent, and committed to lifelong learning. Emphasizing lifelong learning and embracing technological advances, we will not only address the shortage but also elevate the quality of patient care. By coming together to support and transform nursing education, we can build a stronger, more resilient nursing workforce that will address the healthcare needs of the future.
